Accounting for the anisoplanatic point spread function in deep wide - field adaptive optics images ⋆

چکیده
In this paper we present the approach we have used to determine and account for the anisoplanatic point spread function (PSF) in deep adaptive optics (AO) images for the Survey of a Wide Area with NACO (SWAN) at the ESO VLT. The survey comprises adaptive optics observations in the Ks band totaling ∼ 30 arcmin , assembled from 42 discrete fields centered on different bright stars suitable for AO guiding. We develop a parametric model of the PSF variations across the field of view in order to build an accurate model PSF for every galaxy detected in each of the fields. We show that this approach is particularly convenient, as it uses only easily available data and makes no uncertain assumptions about the stability of the isoplanatic angle during any given night. The model was tested using simulated galaxy profiles to check its performance in terms of recovering the correct morphological parameters; we find that the results are reliable up to Ks ∼ 20.5 (KAB ∼ 22.3) in a typical SWAN field. Finally, the model obtained was used to derive the first results from five SWAN fields, and to obtain the AO morphology of 55 galaxies brighter than Ks = 20. These preliminary results demonstrate the unique power of AO observations to derive the details of faint galaxy morphologies and to study galaxy evolution.

Starfinder: a code for crowded stellar fields analysis
Starfinder is an IDL code for the deep analysis of stellar fields, designed for well-sampled images with high and low Strehl factor. The Point Spread Function (PSF) for the analysis is extracted directly from the CCD frame, to take into account the actual structure of the instrumental response and the atmospheric effects. An important feature is represented by the possibility to measure the ani...
متن کاملThe Anisoplanatic Point-Spread Function in Adaptive Optics
The effects of anisoplanatism on the adaptive optics point-spread function are investigated. A model is derived that combines observations of the guide star with an analytic formulation of anisoplanatism in order to generate predictions for the adaptive optics point-spread function at arbitrary locations within the field of view. The analytic formulation captures the dependencies of anisoplanat...
متن کاملAnisoplanatic Image Restoration at ADFA
We have been investigating ways to restore images of objects obtained with a telescope under anisoplanatic atmospheric conditions. Anisoplanatic means that the point spread function due to atmospheric turbulence is position dependent. We began by looking at extended astronomical objects, such as craters on the moon but have turned our attention to extended objects on the earth’s surface imaged ...
متن کاملAnisoplanatism in Adaptive Optics Compensation of a Focused Beam Using Distributed Beacons
In systems that achieve laser beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence by phase compensation with adaptive optics, the performance depends on the beacon’s spatial distribution. A formulation is obtained to calculate the anisoplanatic Strehl ratio of a phase compensated, focused beam for any beacon distribution and turbulence profile. Analytic results are obtained for several beacon geome...

We describe the design and performance of an adaptive optics retinal imager that is optimized for use during dynamic correction for eye movements. The system incorporates a retinal tracker and stabilizer, a wide-field line scan scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO), and a high-resolution microelectromechanical-systems-based adaptive optics SLO. The detection system incorporates selection and posi...
